There are several ways to keep a dog house warm for
your dog during the winter. We will discuss some of the different
options you have. Depending on your climate, you may need to take one or
several of these options and put them into practice. We will discuss dog
house heaters, burrow beds, dog house doors, and insulated dog houses.
Dog house doors can be very important and are perhaps the first step you
should take to keep your dog warm in the winter and cool during the
summer. Just like your own house, if the door is left wide open and it
is cold outside, it doesn’t take too long for your house to get cold. It
is the same for your dog. A dog house door will keep the wind out and
will help your dog keep his own body heat which will warm the dog house
in.
The next step you will want to take is getting some warm bedding for
your dog. We recommend a
burrow bed for dogs as it allows your dog to
dig and burrow into it to stay warm, especially when it is really cold
outside. You could also use a bunch of old blankets, but the burrow bed
is designed to help keep them warm.
If you live in a colder climate, you may want to consider an insulated
dog house. Just like your own home, insulation helps keep the
temperature more moderate in the dog house to prevent extreme hot and
cold weather from affecting your dog. You
can always buy an insulated dog house, or you can build even a better
one if you are handy with woodworking projects using some
insulated dog house plans.
If you live in a really cold climate and don’t want to take most of
these other steps, a heated dog house with a
dog house heater can be beneficial. The problem with this
option is it requires having some sort of power source to your dog
house. If you already have this available, like if your dog house is on
your patio near your outdoor power outlets, this can be a good solution.
However, you can probably keep your dog warm enough in most climates
with the other tips we have presented.
